L'impressionnant bâtiment néoclassique qui accueille l'Altes Museum (Vieux musée) fut construit entre 1823 et 1830 par le célèbre architecte Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Depuis plus d'un siècle, il abrite une formidable collection d'antiquités classiques (Antikensammlung). La collection d'art grec se trouvant au rez-de-chaussée du palais, dont la muséographie a été entièrement revue en 2011, alors que le premier étage offre des expositions temporaires. Depuis 2010, il accueille également une collection de travaux et d'oeuvres d'art de l'Étrurie antique et de Rome.
